Dr. James E. Perkins, DC, ND, Director

Dr. James E. Perkins, DC, ND, Director

Dr James PerkinsA condition resulting in serious back pain drove James Perkins to seek medical care in 1974.  While working his way through college towards his first degree at Western Michigan University, he was employed at a large warehouse in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Multiple on-the-job injuries resulted in a serious low back condition and severe sciatic pain down one leg.

Four years of taking medication and going through physical therapy, as well as doctor recommended bed rest, resulted in no measurable or lasting relief.  Friends encouraged him to see a chiropractor. However, his medical doctors discouraged him from considering this as a valid option for treating his condition.

In 1977, just prior to graduating from Western Michigan University, the condition became so debilitating that surgery appeared to be the only solution.  A decision to put off surgery until after graduation gave him time to re-evaluate his options.  He knew surgery had to be a last resort.  Having nothing to lose, since surgery appeared to be inevitable, he chose to have a  chiropractic examination and began treatment under the care of a chiropractic physician.  This changed his life.

In the weeks and months that followed, Dr. Perkins found dramatic relief and experienced complete healing.  At a time when he was just launching his career, he could not ignore his profound experience of being restored to vibrant health through Chiropractic.  So impressed was he, that he left his corporate job in 1979, went back to school and began working toward a degree in Chiropractic.

He pursued his next degree through the doctoral program at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa.  During his years in Davenport, he married his wife Ellen and started a family.  After graduating from Palmer College in 1983, Dr. Perkins returned with his family to Michigan and entered private practice in the City of Farmington.  He founded and is currently Clinical Director of Alternative Health Solutions, in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Dr. Perkins states that while he was trained and practices as a traditional chiropractor, he has diligently studied and focuses deeply in the role of “innate” and the energetic side of  healing of the human body.  This lead to extensive studies early in Dr. Perkins’ career.  He became a Certified Traditional Naturopath in 1997.  Through his post-graduate work, and over 30 years of clinical experience, he has become highly proficient in clinical nutrition and Continuity Resistance Balancing (muscle testing through reflexology).

While holding fast to traditional Chiropractic philosophy, Dr. Perkins embraces energetic healing and has completed extensive post-graduate work in SOT (Sacral Occipital Technique), Contact Reflex Analysis and Reiki.  He is proficient in trauma release therapy, Matrix Repatterning®, which he learned first hand for the originator of the technique, Dr. George Roth, D.C., N.D. out of Toronto, Canada.

Today Alternative Health Solutions is a multi-practitioner natural healing center offering a naturopathic approach to treating problems ranging from structural, nutritional and metabolic imbalances to anxiety, sleeplessness and depression.  Patients have a say, and participate as an integral contributing member of their own health care team through naturopathy, chiropractic, energetic healing, acupuncture and oriental medicine, Structural Integration Therapy (Rolfing), massage therapy, and Reiki.

Dr. Perkins’ vision of a convergence of physical medicine, naturopathy and energy healing, has grown Alternative Health Solutions to a 3,600 square foot alternative healing arts center.  Energy Therapy brings a different way of looking at and addressing such difficult and hard to treat contributors to chronic problems, such as old injury or emotional components which impact the body’s ability to heal and achieve true health.

Dr. Perkins has earned respect within the chiropractic profession, locally and nationally, as well as in many areas of the medical profession.  He has collaborated with many health professionals in the care of his patients over a span of more than 30 years in service to his community.  His vision to have a positive impact on West Bloomfield and surrounding communities continues to benefit more and more individuals and families, by putting within their reach, quality, safe and affordable ways to achieve health and healing through natural means.

In addition, Dr. Perkins has developed a technique which he now teaches nationally called Continuity Resistance Balancing SM (CRB).  This technique has been developed over 30 years of integrating many existing techniques that Dr. Perkins has become certified in.  Most of these techniques he has learned first hand from the originators of the technique.  Melding these techniques together and creating a streamlined method that is easily duplicated and extremely accurate,  allowing a practitioner a user-friendly yet comprehensive procedure for diagnosis and treatment.  His patient outcomes with this technique are excellent.
